It is known that Olmecs, one of the ancient American Civilizations, have benefited from cocoa trees before Mayas. The word “cocoa” comes from the Olmec language. Mayas have attributed a divine meaning to cocoa. Scientific name of cocoa, “Theobroma Cacao” means “Gods’ Food” in Latin.

In 600 D.C., Mayas made a chocolate drink. According to the legend, Moctezuma, the Aztec king, was drinking 50 cups of chocolate every day.

Chocolate had become very popular in time of the Aztecs as a drink of the cream of society. Only governors, priests, high ranking officers and merchants who were to be honored were able to taste this special drink.
